What this site is
Tyers Reference publishes measured, sourced specifications for fly fishing and fly tying gear. Every value links to the page or measurement it came from. A blank means no source we could find publishes that value; we do not estimate.
Using the specs
The specs are published as the manufacturer or source states them, checked as carefully as we can. Makers change products, sizes and tables without notice, and sources disagree. Use the specs as a reference, check the source link when it matters, and do not rely on them where an error could cause harm or loss. The site is provided as it is, without any warranty.
Data licence
Placeholder: the data licence has not been chosen yet. The owner is deciding between Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) and the Open Database License (ODbL 1.0). Until this section names one, the data is shared for reference only, and contributions are accepted on the understanding that they will be published under whichever of those two licences is chosen.
Accounts
You sign in with a link we email to you; there is no password. Keep your email account secure, because anyone who can read it can sign in as you. Moderators and the owner also use a code from an authenticator app. One account per person, and no shared accounts. We may suspend an account that is used to submit invented values, to harass anyone, or to get around these terms.
Contributor agreement
This applies to everything you submit, signed in or not. You accept it once per version, the first time you submit.
- Only what a source states, or what you measured. Each value you submit was read from the page, table, sheet or photo you cite, for that exact product and size, or you measured it yourself and say how. You do not estimate, interpolate between sizes, convert units the source did not state, or copy a value from a similar model.
- You may share it. You have the right to submit the value and the evidence. Facts such as a measurement are not owned by anyone, but photos and documents can be: upload only photos you took, or documents you are allowed to share.
- Licence to publish. You let Tyers Reference publish, edit, combine and share what you submit, as part of the database and under its data licence, for as long as the site exists. This cannot be withdrawn for values that have been published, because others may already rely on them, but you can ask us to remove your name.
- Credit. Values you contributed show "Contributed by" with your display name, unless you turn that off in your profile. Anonymous submissions show "Anonymous contributor". Evidence photos and documents are public once a value citing them is approved.
- Review. A moderator checks every submission before it is published and may decline it with a note. A manufacturer's own value takes precedence over any other. Approved values can later be corrected or reverted, and every change is recorded.
- Disclosure. If you work for or are paid by a brand you submit about, say so in your profile or in the note. Brand representatives can be verified by the owner.
Moderators
Moderators are industry professionals approved by the owner for the categories they know. They approve only what the evidence shows, explain every decline, and never review their own submissions. The owner may change or remove a moderator's role at any time.
Acceptable use
Do not submit spam, advertising, personal information about other people, or anything unlawful. Do not try to break, overload or scrape the API beyond normal use. Automated submissions need the owner's permission.
Changes and contact
